Privacy Restroom Partitions: Manufacturer Comparison & Upgrade Solutions

Privacy Partitions

Privacy-centered design is at the forefront of restroom upgrades and remodels these days because privacy is one of the top concerns among patrons today. In response, every major partition manufacturer — all of which we carry — now offers restroom partition solutions designed to address privacy concerns in a variety of ways. This makes it easier to upgrade privacy standards while also meeting other key priorities such as vandal resistance, durability, and ease of cleaning.

When it comes to installing new restroom partitions for your facility, there is a lot for facility managers to consider. Some key factors include:

  • Durability and Vandal Resistance
  • Maintenance and Ease of Cleaning
  • Total Installed Cost
  • Lead Time/Availability
  • Moisture and Corrosion Resistance
  • ADA and Code Compliance
  • Installation Simplicity
  • Retrofit Compatibility
  • Aesthetics

Not only do your new and improved restrooms need to meet all of your expectations and requirements, it’s also very important to consider how the new partitions will improve the restroom experience of your patrons.

What Restroom Patrons Expect Today

Privacy & Comfort

  • Visual privacy
  • Reduced gaps and sightlines
  • Personal space

Cleanliness & Maintenance Confidence

  • Clean appearance
  • Perception of hygiene
  • Odor control

Safety & Usability

  • Stability and sturdiness
  • Sense of security
  • Accessibility and ease of use

For this article, we’re going to focus on what patrons want when it comes to restroom partition design. We’ll also explore the features that top partition manufacturers offer that align with patron expectations. Upgrading your partitions is a big undertaking, so we think you should have it all: durability, low maintenance, affordability, privacy, cleanliness, and a sense of security.

The biggest concern for most patrons in the restroom is privacy. Older partitions have large gaps between the doors, panels, and pilasters, making users feel self-conscious and uneasy. You don’t want your people to feel uncomfortable while using the restroom because it can create a negative impression of your facility.

A Comparison of Restroom Partition Privacy Features

As privacy expectations in public restrooms continue to evolve, major restroom partition manufacturers have responded by developing privacy-focused partition lines and add-ons designed to reduce sightlines, and create a more comfortable user experience.

What Does “European Style” Mean in Restroom Partitions?

In many parts of Europe, public restroom privacy standards tend to be higher than those traditionally found in the United States. As a result, “European Style” restroom partitions typically refer to systems with full-height construction (floor-to-ceiling partition walls and doors), minimal gaps between doors and panels, and in some cases, floor-to-ceiling mounting options. These designs create a clean, seamless appearance while significantly improving privacy by reducing visibility at the pilasters, hinges, and floor areas. In response to the growing demand for increased privacy and comfort, more facilities in the United States are incorporating European-style restroom designs into their renovation projects.

Features of Privacy Partitions by Manufacturer

We carry partitions from many of the industry’s leading manufacturers, including ASI Global Partitions, Bobrick, General Partitions, Hadrian, Bradley, and Scranton Products. Each manufacturer offers privacy-focused partition options featuring reduced or no-gap designs, enhanced door and pilaster coverage, and full-height privacy configurations. Be aware that each brand uses different terminology and design approaches to achieve the similar goals of reducing sight lines, closing gaps, and improving user comfort.

ASI Global Partitions

ASI Global Partitions uses Integrated Privacy™ technology, which combines overlapping components on both the hinge and latch sides to eliminate sightlines into the compartment. On the hinge side, integrated components overlap the pilaster, while on the latch side, flush closure systems conceal gaps. These privacy units are available in Stainless Steel and Powder Coated Steel.

ASI stainless steel privacy partitions

ASI has another line of privacy focused partitions that come in Phenolic called ‘Phenolic Maximum Privacy® Partitions’. These partitions are up to 120” high. The floor-mounted, overhead-braced configuration is available in standard heights up to 96″. Both styles are designed with just a 1″ floor clearance to minimize sightlines and maximize user privacy. These partitions can be specified in any ASI phenolic color, making it easy to combine enhanced privacy with a customized aesthetic.  These feature no sight, self closing doors with overlapping closures for privacy, as well as occupancy indicator latches to show when a unit is in use.

ASI also offers privacy strips which are designed to close remaining gaps between existing doors and panels. These strips help create a continuous visual barrier that improves seclusion, and reinforces user comfort in existing or retrofit installations.

Bobrick

Bobrick emphasizes that privacy is no longer just a trend, but an expectation in modern restroom design. Their cubicle and partition systems are manufactured to order with tight tolerances to help minimize gaps and reduce sightlines compared to standard industry configurations.

Their PRIVADA® and Evolve Cubicles feature European-style privacy, including full-height door and panel options designed to create a more enclosed, room-like environment (See an example of the Evolve partitions on the right). Standard configurations include 72″ doors and panels with reduced floor clearance, while PRIVADA also offers extended-height systems up to 96″ with as little as 4″ floor clearance. Many systems also include occupancy indicators to improve usability and user awareness.

General Partitions

General Partitions offers increased privacy configurations such as Eastern Style (67-inch height) and Eastern Max Style (72-inch height) systems, which raise panel and door heights, and reduce floor clearance to limit sightlines. Their newest 70 Series line features elevated privacy, with 72” high panels and doors mounted 6” above the finished floor, with pilasters 7’ 6” high. Full-height privacy components help conceal gaps and improve user privacy, while pedestal supports allow for efficient cleaning beneath the partitions.

They also offer overlapping door options for ultimate stall privacy. (See the example below – the last two photos showing light blue partitions on the right). Optional continuous brackets and no-sightline door configurations further enhance privacy performance. These systems are designed to be adaptable across multiple partition materials and series. See the different ways no sightline doors can be achieved in the left three example doors shared below.
Privacy strips, also known as full length hinges, can close gaps between doors and panels without completing full restroom renovations.

Another privacy feature General Partitions has is their Slide Latch Indicator. These door latches show whether a partition stall is in use or not by displaying green (unoccupied) or red (occupied,) and are available for 1” and ¾” doors. Installing Slide Latch Indicators reduces accidental attempts to open a locked door.

Hadrian (Zurn Elkay Water Solutions)

Hadrian, part of Zurn Elkay Water Solutions, focuses on enhanced privacy through full-height options and its proprietary “No-Sightline Solution.” The Elite and Elite Plus systems feature extended door and panel heights with reduced floor clearances (64″–72″ heights, mounted as low as 6″ above the floor) to minimize visibility into the stall. Their Elite Max systems feature the maximum in privacy, with a max height of 92” high (available in 1” increments between 73”-92”), with complete elimination of sightlines, and pedestal mounted for easy floor maintenance. The Elite Max partitions are available in powder coated and stainless steel, and feature easy installation.

Hadrian Partitions no sightline

A key feature is the
No-Sightline Solution, which uses a full-height continuous stop and hinge-side filler to eliminate gaps around the door. This system also includes concealed fasteners, noise-reducing bumpers, and a secure latching mechanism, and is available for both new and retrofit installations across standard and high-privacy configurations.

Hadrian Indicator Latch

Hadrian has a unique Indicator Latch design that features an indicator area that is over 150% larger than other indicators on the market. It also has a unique rectangular design that mirrors the partition door shape to create a sleek aesthetic.

Bradley Corporation

Bradley’s No-Site™ privacy system is engineered to minimize visibility throughout the stall by reducing gaps between doors, pilasters, and panels. On phenolic partition systems, this integrated No-Site design comes standard, while stainless steel configurations can be enhanced with full-height privacy strips, or upgraded with continuous full-height hinges and brackets to further limit sightlines.

Bradley also incorporates a rabbeted edge door design, which creates a flush, interlocking meeting surface at both the hinge and latch sides. This tight-fit detail further supports a “no-sight” appearance by reducing visibility through door edges, especially in phenolic-core systems.

Additional privacy can be achieved through extra-height doors and panels, including 72″ (1829 mm) tall options mounted 6″ (153 mm) above finished floor, or 69″ (1753 mm) tall doors and panels mounted 9″ (230 mm) AFF for ADA-compliant stalls. These configurations are available with either floor-mounted overhead-braced or floor-to-ceiling installation styles.

For expanded enclosure, Bradley also offers extra-depth panel options up to 84″ (2134 mm), which can be paired with extra-height layouts to further enhance overall stall privacy and user comfort.

Scranton Products

Scranton Products Eclipse system focuses on continuous edge detailing and overlapping components, including continuous edge-mounted hinges and floor-mounted side panels. These design elements work together to create a high-privacy stall with reduced visibility at key connection points.

Scranton Products Eclipse toilet partitions are designed for a clean, modern aesthetic with enhanced privacy options and durable, low-maintenance construction. Selection Support

At Equiparts, we help facility managers identify partition systems that meet both performance requirements and privacy expectations, while keeping other requirements (like budgets) in mind, then sourcing quotes across leading manufacturers.

Whether you are planning a full restroom renovation with European-style or full-height systems, a mid-level upgrade with reduced gaps and enhanced privacy features, or a budget-friendly retrofit using privacy strips and upgraded hardware, we can help guide you toward the right solution for your facility’s needs.

Retrofit Privacy Solutions for Restroom Partitions

If you aren’t ready for a full restroom renovation—or it isn’t in the budget—there are still several effective ways to improve privacy in existing restrooms.

Add Privacy Strips

Privacy strips can be added to partition doors to help eliminate large gaps between the door and pilaster. This option, such as those offered by General Partitions, uses an offset aluminum strip mounted to the door to reduce sightlines on both the latch and hinge sides.

Upgrade Door Hinges and Locks

Replacing older hinges and door hardware with newer privacy-focused options can significantly reduce sightlines at key connection points. Many modern retrofit hardware solutions are designed to cover existing hinge and latch areas, allowing for an easier upgrade without a full partition replacement.

Add New Privacy Screens

Urinal Privacy Screens

Historically, urinals were commonly installed side-by-side without any dividers. Today, however, it is increasingly common to see privacy screens installed between each urinal or at select fixtures. While not required by code, these screens align with modern restroom design expectations, and can help reduce discomfort and improve user privacy in school settings.

Shower Privacy Screens

Similarly, shower privacy screens were once uncommon in older school locker rooms, community pools, and municipal recreation facilities. However, there has been a clear shift toward greater privacy and fewer open shower layouts. This change is driven by rising expectations for personal privacy, increased user comfort, and broader adoption of more inclusive facility design standards.

There’s no single “right” partition system for every facility, but there are more privacy-focused options available now than ever before. From full European-style systems to simple retrofit solutions, facilities can choose the level of upgrade that fits their goals and budget.

For facility managers, the challenge is often narrowing down what makes the most sense across all the available manufacturers and features. That’s where having a clear understanding of the options—and the right supplier support—can help simplify the process and lead to better long-term decisions.

We frequently work with facility managers at schools, prisons, universities, commercial buildings, retail, restaurants, and other commercial buildings to create updated restrooms that meet their criteria.
